NZCT NELSON SPORTSPERSON
OF THE YEAR AWARDS 7th DECEMBER 2011.
The Club Waimea indoor bowls ladies nationals team was nominated for the NNZCT sportsperson of the year awards this year with the finals being held at the Hope Community church in Ranzau Road Hope.
The ladies nomination was good enough to see them get through to the final 3 teams for the category for which they were nominated for being the team category.
It was suggested by Kevin that we get the club van to transport the ladies to and from the event and for this Kevin also volunteered to be the driver for the night and the club was very obliging to let us have the use of the van on that night and at no cost. For which the ladies appreciated the chance to be driven to and from the event and it was noted on more than one occasion that night that we had travelled as a team to the event.
Now to the event itself where the ladies were there at approx. 5.30 pm for pre-dinner drinks And a bit of a chit chat to settle the nerves before the show got on the road.
The mc for the night was Nick Tansley a television presenter who did a grand job as mc and the guest speaker was Olympic gold medallist and world record holder for cycling was Sarah Ulmer and there again she was a very good speaker who held every bodies attention.
There was a number of categories before the team section and they were all worthy recipients but unfortunately our ladies were beaten to the top spot by the outdoor bowlers who had been also nominated.
But never the less the Ten ladies from Club Waimea did both themselves and Club Waimea very proud as I was very pleased to have been part of the audience to be part of such an occasion.
The ten ladies were as follows :
Mary Jordan, Jean McKenzie, Linda Carrick, Pat Stade, Mary Palmer, Rhonda Bellis, Betty Henderson, Lyn Sloper, Hillary Ferris and Pat Carrick.
These ten ladies were supported by Reg Clark, Lloyd Bellis and Kevin McKenzie.
So over all it was a very enjoyable night had by all who attended the occasion so we now look forward to future opportunities to go to more such events in the future.
Thanks Kevin McKenzie.
