A Night at the Races

March 30th, 2010

This is one of our fun activities the club puts on periodically throughout the year. Entry is free to participate
and there are always a lot of laughs as we see if our favourite horse is lucky with the roll of the dice to be first past the line. Punters are given some funny race money to place their bets on each race and at the conclusion of the event a blind auction takes place. Great prizes and novelty prizes are keenly sort after. A club lighter fetched several million dollars whilst some electrical equipment went very cheaply which is all part of the fun.

The next event is being held on Friday 9th April at 7pm.

For those interested in being one of our horses we are accepting nomimations now with acceptances closing on Thursday 8th April at 7pm, so that we can prepare the race books. Please ring the office or see the bar staff to be involved.

Discussion Paper-National Multi Sport Tournament

March 29th, 2010

Background
The demise of the Supersports competition a few years ago means Clubs NZ is lacking a social multisport competition. Even when Supersports was running it failed to engender significant participation.

Proposal

That Club Waimea seek to capitalise on its proven record of hosting tournaments, good facilities and ‘holiday’ location by introducing a national multi-sport tournament. While offering reasonable prize money the thrust of the tournament be social, inviting participation by a broad range of (often overlooked) Clubs NZ members, with the aim of encouraging maximum participation. That the tournament be a pairs competition; · That teams can be male, female or mixed, competing on an equal basis; · That there be three sections, each with three events. A team can enter only one section and must compete in each event in that section. While it is a pairs competition a team can consist of three players, in which case each member must compete in two events. Any individual can compete for only one team. Suggested sections are Active Sports, Sedate Sports, Genteel Sports. The inclusion of Karaoke creates a section for the less able-bodied folk who want the social involvement. · There be no limit on the number of teams that can be entered. · That there also be a competition for the best visiting club (trophy) which incorporates a Quiz Evening as a tie-breaker.
Section One – Golf, squash, pool. Section Two – Outdoor bowls, snooker, darts. Section Three cards, indoor bowls, karaoke. Evening Entertainment – If the event is run over three days: Day One – Karaoke Competition; Day Two – Quiz competition; Day Three – Social/ Prize-giving keeps entertainment / dining “in-club” maximising benefits for the Club.
Entry Fees / Prizes – Entry fee be $10 per person per event i.e. $60.00 per team. Suggested prize money for EACH section: 1st $450; 2nd $300; 3rd $150.
The amount each individual gets depends upon whether it is a two or three person
team. Prize money worth winning but not so much that it becomes the prime reason for entering. Should be easy to fund through Club’s traditional sponsors. Club Waimea has the facilities, experience and ability to host such an event. The
Discussion Paper – developing a national multi-sport tournament region is known as a holiday destination. Good promotion can bring these attributes together and attract enough entries to develop this into a significant annual event with ongoing rewards for the Club and its members.

Snooker

March 22nd, 2010

The 2010 interclub snooker competition will commence on March 23, and continue each Tuesday until August 31. There will be play on all three of our tables at Club Waimea every week during that time. Club Waimea will have two teams in this
year’s event, our playing-through champions as the Breakers at number 1, and a new team playing under the name of the Rovers at number 2. Both of these teams have good playing strength, with expectations of performing well in what looks to be a strong and close competition. We are pleased to have several new members join our section of late,
and this will be reflected in an even tighter contest when our club championships come around later in the year. Every club member is eligible to join in with our Sunday Shootouts which will be on the third Sunday of each month,
commencing at 1pm. This is a great way for prospective players to meet & mix with our regulars in a social atmosphere.
We also have a group who play on Monday afternoons from 1pm and any club member wishing to come along wouldbe welcomed.

4×4 Anniversary Weekend

March 3rd, 2010

Thirteen 4×4 vehicles met early at Club Waimea to be briefed by Jim Allen on their trip. The trip was very much a local history lesson with many fascinating facts divulged along the way. Riverlands Cob Cottage (built 1865) was the first stop, then Redwood Pass Road passing lagoons to Dashwood and on to Seddon and Blind River. In 1948 the Christchurch-Picton express left the rails there killing six people. The Clarence River was the site of the steamer Taiaroa’s wreck in 1886 with 33 lives lost. On to Kaikoura and an enjoyable night of socialising at a nearby hotel. The back road was taken from Kaikoura to Waiau and onto Hanmer Springs, then over Jollies Pass and onto the Molesworth Road. After travelling through the Awatere Valley to Blenheim it was home to Club Waimea, completing a most enjoyable trip.
