4×4 Anniversary Weekend
Thirteen 4×4 vehicles met early at Club Waimea to be briefed by Jim Allen on their trip. The trip was very much a local history lesson with many fascinating facts divulged along the way. Riverlands Cob Cottage (built 1865) was the first stop, then Redwood Pass Road passing lagoons to Dashwood and on to Seddon and Blind River. In 1948 the Christchurch-Picton express left the rails there killing six people. The Clarence River was the site of the steamer Taiaroa’s wreck in 1886 with 33 lives lost. On to Kaikoura and an enjoyable night of socialising at a nearby hotel. The back road was taken from Kaikoura to Waiau and onto Hanmer Springs, then over Jollies Pass and onto the Molesworth Road. After travelling through the Awatere Valley to Blenheim it was home to Club Waimea, completing a most enjoyable trip.
